The Europe Hotel and Resort
On the untouched bank of the largest lake in Killarney lies Hotel Europe, built in the 1960s. During the conversion of the hotel, previous construction phases in architecture and interior design had to be taken into consideration and adapted accordingly to the existing concepts. The layout of the rooms was optimised and, in order to renew the HVAC systems, first stripped right back to a shell. During the restoration, emphasis was placed on combining traditional Irish
elements, like expressive wallpaper and warm, heavy fabrics, with a contemporary design language. The main objective when redesigning the façade was to afford a maximum view over Loch Lein and to incorporate it into the existing building. Now that the conversion works have finished, the appearance of the building is more homogeneous, contemporary in character, and one that reflects the regional surroundings. In 2012, Hotel Europe was awarded as the best 5-star hotel in Ireland, as well as the best Irish resort hotel.
